It was all West End girls…and guys at Hartford’s sixth annual West End Civic Association’s (WECA) “Dine Around The West End” last Saturday.  Mike photographed the cocktail party at the beautiful home on Scarborough Street where over 200 West Enders gathered for some winter cheer before heading to their various progressive dinner parties in the neighborhood.

Among those attending were Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez, Channel 3 morning anchor Eileen O’Connor and her husband Matt Fleury, President & CEO of the Connecticut Science Center, and our friends, Sally and Ken Lerman.

The West End is a beautiful part of Hartford and the WECA members demonstrate lots of camaraderie along with pride in their neighborhood.

Jane and I recently photographed “A Night Out in Style”– a 1920s themed gala held at the Hop Meadow Country Club in Simsbury, Connecticut, which raised money for Gifts of Love.  Gifts of Love is based in Avon and helps local families in need by providing food, furniture and other household items–a great organization.

Our friend Adria spearheaded the planning and did an awesome job–the gala gets better every year.  The very dapper crowd (check out our friends Ken and Sally–the first pic in the blogshow below–looking awesome) participated in a variety of events from a silent auction, a runway fashion show, a live auction, and casino tables.

The fashion show emcee’d by 96.5 TIC’s Damon Scott was great fun to shoot.  The celebrity models–who had a blast working it down the runway–included Billy Grant, chef and owner of Grant’s and Bricco restaurants in West Hartford, West Hartford Mayor Scott Slifka and Simsbury State Representative Linda Schofield, Terry Dietz–former CBS Survivor contestant, and Kevin Cottle, a recent finalist on the Hell’s Kitchen series.

Lastly…we even had a “3rd shooter” at this event….thanks to Val for taking a nice pic of us late night (last shot in blogshow below).  To view the photos, click on a pic and use your arrow keys to cycle through them.

Last week I had the pleasure of being the photographer for the YWCA’s “In the Company of Women” Annual Fundraising Luncheon which is a gathering of 1400 Connecticut women at the Connecticut Convention center.  It’s full of the state’s women leaders (political, business, youth, and more) including Governor Jodi Rell, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, and Catherine Smith, CEO of ING U.S. Retirement Services.  The keynote speaker was Jeannette Walls, author of the very popular book group pick “The Glass Castle” (great book, if you haven’t read it).  I found it fascinating to hear her story first hand and have the opportunity to talk with her one-on-one as we waited to photograph her with guests.

The YWCA mission is “to empower women and girls and eliminate racism.”  They are “committed to creating opportunities one woman at a time.  The YWCA
serves Greater Hartford with vital programs, including early learning
and school-age childcare; emergency, transitional and permanent
supportive housing; child abuse prevention; youth leadership
development; and financial literacy education.”  If you’d like to make a donation or volunteer, you can find out more information here.
