A Message from a Wedding Client…Please Help the Japanese
We received the following email from Mika, our client. Please consider making a contribution.
To family, friends, and colleagues:
For those who do not know me, I am a Japanese citizen living in Oakland, California working as a resident for Kaiser Permanente. As a citizen of Japan, I wanted to find a way to help those affected by the disaster in my country. I have been living in the United States for more than 20 years and have a network of friends who know my family and are as deeply affected by this tragedy as I am.
I wanted to thank you for all of your concern for our family in Japan. Fortunately, our family members live in Kyushu and were not directly affected by the earthquake and tsunami. However, there are thousands of people in northeast Japan who are currently homeless, without food or water, struggling to survive the aftermath of the earthquake, tsunami and now the threat of a nuclear meltdown. We have many friends in Chiba, Tokyo, and other parts of northeast Japan who were affected by this disaster. Like many of you, I have been struck by the images and videos of the Japanese people replayed over and over on TV. I know that some of you have already donated to the cause, but if you have not, I am asking you to make a difference and make a donation to the Red Cross.
Below is a link that the Red Cross has set up for us to donate to the Japan Disaster Relief fund:

Please forward this email to other friends and family who may be willing to help.
Thank you for your support,
Mika Sumiyoshi

Hartford City Ballet Dancers
We’ve been shooting studio portraits at the Hartford City Ballet for the past year on Park Road in the Parkville section of Hartford. Now that they’ve moved to new digs–on New Park Road in the old Hummer dealership’s half-Quonset hut building–we’ve moved with them. It’s a nice airy spot with great lighting and really nice folks who run the Ballet.
A few weeks back we had a fun shoot with the dancers themselves–in action. Hannah Fluet and Alejandro Bobadilla, two of the Hartford City Ballet dancers, were perfect to work with…and it’s cool how the camera freezes their movements which look so different when you view them in real time. The HCB has hip hop, jazz, Zumba and other dance classes in addition to ballet–check them out at www.hartfordcityballet.org. Our son Sebbie already has some signature moves…we’ll have to enroll him in some classes soon!

Road Trip! Mets 2011 Spring Training in Florida
Given this winter it was especially nice to be back in Port St. Lucie, Florida last week for our 3rd annual photo shoot with the New York Mets at Spring Training for our client SNY (SportsNet NY), the “Online Home of All Things NY Sports.” It’s a really enjoyable assignment and we thought we’d give some insight into how we shoot it.
These aren’t sports shots or even outdoor photos; instead, what we’re going for is intimate and iconic studio photos of the players, some straight on and others with pitching or batting action. Last Wednesday we set up a studio in the visitor’s locker room at Digital Domain Park using our Profoto lights with a softbox and umbrella and a pop-up background. Afterwards we met with SNY’s Supervising Producer to strategize the shoot and then Jane and I had our own meeting by the pool : }
On Thursday–aka Photo Day, when the baseball card shots and other promo shots are taken upstairs on the field–the Mets players make the rounds into our locker room “studio” starting at 730am…we’re the last stop on the photo circuit. Working with our client from SNY, Jane shot the 54 players with the Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens. It’s a very fast shoot, 1-3 minutes with each player and the shoot was over by 9:30am The Mets players are great to work with–loose and natural in front of the camera.
We can’t post the 2011 photos until Opening Day in April, but here shots of David Wright and Angel Pagan from our shoot in 2010…along with some iPhone 4 shots of our own Little Leaguers Sebbie and Jude attending last Saturday’s Mets vs. Braves game. Made my Mom’s day–she’s a huge Mets fan and loved every minute at the ball park with the Shauck clan. Check back on our blog on April 1 for the 2011 photos of the Mets. Go Mets in 2011!!!
