Client Spotlight: Made in Manhattan…Cara Landy Handbags!

Cara Landy…what a great name for a fashion brand.  Celebrities from Hilary Duff to the Gossip Girl stars agree—they’ve got their own Cara Landy handbags hanging on their shoulders.  Cara, whose 2009 wedding to Robbie we photographed, is from West Hartford CT, and started designing and making handbags at age 14.  After college she took her game to New York City’s Garment District where today she designs and manufactures her eponymous bags.  Cara’s customers are typically women 18-35 who find her handbags in stores like Bloomingdales and Henri Bendel (and online by etailers like eBags and TrendyTrousseau.com), but she sells mostly through hundreds of smaller boutiques around the US.  Her business gets a big boost from celebrity use such as when Ashley Simpson gave Cara Landy handbags to her birthday party guests, which People Magazine publicized.  Then there was the time Oprah showcased Cara’s handbags in her O Magazine, prompting a deluge of calls and hits to Cara’s website.

What’s not to love about Cara’s bags?  Beautiful, soft leathers, practical zippered pockets and cool colors like lime green, crocodile and chocolate.  She makes these bags in the USA, right in Manhattan’s Garment District where Cara says “we have so many really talented people from South America and Mexico that take such pride in their work…they’re incredibly skilled and produce amazing quality.”  Cara has grown her business significantly over the past five years despite the recession–in fact she’s made a line of canvas “Hard Times” bags for charity, mocking that recessionista feeling in the streets.  Cara also uses Facebook to get the word out as well, letting her friends know about sample sales with great results.  “I don’t know how we did it before Facebook!” she commented.  Check out Cara’s very cool handbags and see where to buy them at www.caralandy.com.  Thanks Cara!!!
